Caitlin Clark sets WNBA record for most assists in a single game

Caitlin Clark has once again made headlines, setting a new WNBA record with 19 assists in the Indiana Fever’s 101-93 defeat against the Dallas Wings on Wednesday. The previous single-game assist record was held by Courtney Vandersloot of the New York Liberty, who notched 18 assists while with the Chicago Sky in August 2020.

In addition to her record-breaking assists, Clark scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds. Despite her impressive performance, the Fever fell to a 11-15 record for the season.

“I just aim to set up my teammates for success,” Clark commented after the game. “Sometimes I might pass too much and end up causing turnovers when I could have taken the shot myself.”

Her teammate, Aliyah Boston, expressed enthusiasm about the achievement, though she noted that Clark would likely downplay its significance. Clark, the top pick in the 2024 draft, has quickly made a name for herself in the WNBA, already setting a record as the first rookie to achieve a triple-double earlier this month.

Clark was instrumental in 66 of the Fever’s points against the Wings, breaking the previous record held by Diana Taurasi from 2006. This game marked her third instance of scoring over 20 points and
recording more than 10 assists in a single game.

Boston had a career-best 28 points, and NaLyssa Smith contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds. Despite a tied score at 93-93 late in the fourth quarter, the Fever couldn't secure the win. The Wings, led by Arike Ogunbowale and Odyssey Sims, who each scored 24 points, finished the game with an 8-0 run to secure their victory and improve to a 6-19 season record.

This game was the last WNBA match before a month-long break for All-Star festivities and the Paris Olympics. The Fever will resume play against the Phoenix Mercury on August 16, while the Wings are set to face the Connecticut Sun.
